Abstract:

Quality of life (QoL) is becoming one of the key outcomes of health care. This is due to increased respect for the subjective valuations and well-being of patients and an increasing part of the ageing population living with chronic, non-fatal conditions. The aim of this study was to identify the quality of life among long stay hospitalized schizophrenic patients. The research question," Have the schizophrenic patients` quality of life"?. The study was conducted at the Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital in Benha City, which is affiliated to the Ministry of Health. It has 6 departments (5 male and 1 female), with a capacity of 277 beds and the total numbers of the patients are 224 patients (59 female and 165 male).The subject included 100 schizophrenic patients (50 males and 50 females) at Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital in Benha City. The tools of data collection were 1) socio-demographic characteristic, 2) clinical characteristic and 3) Structured interview "Schizophrenic quality of life scale (SQOLs) for schizophrenic patients. The results showed that there was a highly statistically significant relation between total score of quality of life and socio- demographic characteristic of the studied patients related to age, sex, marital status, occupation and economical status and There was a highly statistically significant relation between total score of quality of life and clinical characteristic of the studied patients related to the beginning of illness, recent admission, frequency of admission, method of admission, family history of psychiatric illness and side effects which appear to patients. The study concluded that the highest percentages of the patients were average quality. The study recommended that Schizophrenic patients require interventions that enhance QOL.
