This study aimed at developing skills of literary appreciation for students of secondary stage by using a program based on the human approach. To achieve this aim, skills of literary appreciation which are suitable for students of secondary stage have been defined. A program based on the human approach has been made for developing the low skills of first year secondary students, then two groups of students have been chosen: the experimental group and the control group. A pre- test of literary appreciation has been applied to them. The two groups have been taught by using the defined manipulation for each group. After that, a post- test of literary appreciation has been applied. The study had many results: - on diagnostic skills of literary appreciation, the performance of first year secondary students was low in most of literary appreciation skills. The percentage was 73.8 in the skill of identifying some literature images and its artistic features (55.6%). - on identifying the effectiveness of the program based on the human approach, there were differences with statistical significance at the level 0.01 among the overage performance of the experimental and control group students in skills of literary appreciation in behalf of students of experimental group. This result shows that there was a more increase in the performance of experimental group students than the performance of the control group students in skills of literary appreciation totally and in all sub- skills of literary appreciation except skill of deducing title which express the content of the literature work where as there were no differences with statistical significance among students of experimental and control groups concerning these skills. In the light of results study: The study recommended developing the aims and the content of literature texts in the secondary stage in the light of human approach so, they can contribute in developing skills of literary appreciation, especially, gaining skills of literary appreciation in this stage contributes in expanding the external reading for students.
