Abstract:

Today, tuberculosis is still one of the major public health problems in many places in the world especially in Asia and Africa. The aim of this study was to develop home health care program for patients with tuberculosis and their family caregivers. The design of this study was quasi experimental design conducted at the home of tuberculosis patients who were attended Benha chest hospital in Kalyobia governorate. Convenient sample was used, all the patients attending the setting during the period of the study were included (51) patients and their family caregivers (51). Tools utilized in this study comprised interview questionnaire sheet were consisting of three parts; the first part is socio-demographic characteristics of tuberculosis patients and their family caregivers, and present history of the patient about TB, the second part for assessment the environmental home condition, the third part for the knowledge of the patients and their family caregivers. The second tool was an observational check list to assess the patients and their family caregivers' practices toward tuberculosis. The results of the present study revealed that the patients and their family caregivers had lack of knowledge and practices about tuberculosis; their knowledge and practices was improved after implementing the program. Significance differences association was observed regarding patients and their family caregivers’ knowledge and practices before, and after implementing the program. The study concluded that, the program succeed in improving the patients and their family caregivers’ knowledge and practices regarding tuberculosis. The study recommended that, implement home health care program for all new and old cases to be aware about disease treatment and prevention, and guidelines contain all information about TB should be available in all health care setting provide care for TB cases.
