Course Description:
The course aims at introducing students to the problems of mental retardation and its subdivisions on one hand, and behavioral subdivisions and standards on the other hand. It also discusses the characteristics of retarded persons and society’s concept of mental retardation according to psychology. This course includes a study of significant problems of mental retardation, and the dilemma concerning the definition of mentally retarded, and different divisions and standards of mentally retarded persons. It also examines the significance of mental retardation in relation to the community, and the importance of estimating the size of the problem in the community and a sample of global surveys in the field of mental retardation. Moreover, it discusses the relationship between mental retardation on one side and other variables on the other side such as age and clinical patterns and emotional deprivation or richness. It sheds light on the concept of mental retardation in of psychological theories, and characteristics of the mentally retarded, and diagnosis of mental retardation, trends in the treatment of mental retardation.
