A pathological process in the middle ear may extend to the sinus tympani
In case the sinus tympani is having deep extension complete eradication
with any of available surgical approaches is doubtful and there is
a high incidence of recurrent pathology. The retrofacial approach can completely
expose the sinus tympani. However, it has same limitation due to
the close proximity of the facial nerve and posterior semicircular canal to
the sinus tympani and possible encroachment by the jugular bulb. The
value of high resolution C.T. scanning in evaluating the anatomical situation
of the sinus tympani is the aim of this study.
Size measurements and relations to neighboring structures were ItO
difference when comparirug results obtained from C.T. imaging and anatomical
dissection. Accordingly, the authors suggest that preoperative imaging
can select patients who are candidates for retrofacial approach to
expose and remove pathology in the sinus tympani. |
