Left atrial enlargement is closely related to the chronicity and intensity ofthe burden ofincreased left ventricular filling pressure. Typical ischemic heart disease has a long period of subclinical dysfunction, and as stress echocardiographie testing might not be readily available, left atrial volume index can be used to evaluate themagnitude and chronicity of the ischemic burden and thus evaluate the general cardiovascular risk.
