Abstract:

This study was done to assess ventilatory pulmonary functions , blood gases and bronchial reactivity in patients with lumbar spondylosis with weak abdominal muscles who had no evidence of other diseases known to affect ventilatory functions blood gases or bronchial reactivity . Fourty patients with lumbar spondylosis with weak abdominal muscles and 20 healthy control subjects were included in this study. Analysis of the results revealed that ventilatory functions were significantly reduced in patients with lumbar spondylosis with weak abdominal muscles . Strengthinzz abdominal exercises significantly improved the ventilatory functions while abdominal corset with spinal support did not significantly affect the ventilatory functions . Blood gases and bronchial reactivity in patients with lumbar spondylosis with weak abdominal 'muscles showed no significant difference as compared to control subjects . Blood gases and bronchial reactivity were not affected significantly by both strengthing abdominal exercises and abdominal corset with spinal suppor
