Abstract:

Anaemia in chronic renal failure patients is common and multifactorial. So, the aim of this work was to study stem cell factor in the serum of chronic renal failure patients in a trial to find out a possible role in the pathogenesis of anaemia in chronic renal failure patients. This work was carried on 40 patients and 20 healthy persons as control of both sexes. Patients were classified into 20 chronic renal failure patients on conservative treatment and 20 chronic renal failure patients on regular hemodialysis. The results of this work showed significant increase of stem cell actor (P<0.001) in chronic failure patients either on conservative treatment or on hemodialysis compared with the control group. Stem cell factor level did not correlate either with haematological or biochemical parameters in chronic renal failure patients.A82 The rise in stem cell factor (SCF) level in chronic renal failure patients may be due to either enhanced expression by endothelial cells and fibroblasts or due to retention by the failed kidneys. However, evaluation of stem cell factor as a marker for the severity of anaemia in chronic renal failure as well as its herapeutic efficacy in treatment is still open for speculation.
