This study was carried out on 60 patients
having endoscopically proven chronic active duodenal
ulcer. They were divided into three groups:
group I, received metronidazole in a dose of 500mg
bid for 10 days on two successive months and
cimetidine in a dose of 800 mg daily for two
months, group II, treated with cimetidine and group
III, received antiacids and metronidazole. Two
months after drug therapy endoscopic and histopathologic
study showed complete healing of peptic
ulcer in 90% in group I, 60% in group II and 40%
in group III. Therefore, metronidazole has a role
in peptic ulcer treatment, its addition to cimetidine
augments peptic ulcer healing. Hence it can
be used as an adjuvant therapy to promote peptic
ulcer healing. |
