victims of road traffic accidents (69.7%) admitted to AL-Salam Hospital, Sadah, Republic of Yemen from Jamiary 1996 to June 1996. Evaluation of the patients and emergency care was done by recording the injury severity score based on hospital trauma index (HIT) and by correlating the scores of the patients with hospital stay, morbidity, disability and mortality rates. The patients were divided into 4 groups according to their scores. Groups I and H with ISS (1-8) and (9-15) respectively represented the main bulk of die study (77.3%). Surgical intervention was carried on 105 patients (57.3%). The highest mortality rate was recorded in group TV (ISS > 25) (48%). The study revealed that ISS represented an important method for summarizing injury severity and its correlation with the patients medical status as well as the prognosis of the injury. Also it guided for proper emergency care by keeping over-triage and under-traige to minimum. It is recommended to be added to hospital chart
