Abstract:

Circulating mediators; tumor necrosis factor -a (TNF- aand interleulcin -6 (1L-6) assayed for their potential in predicting mortality and organ failure in sepsis syndrome in patients admitted to intensive care unit (I.C.U.) of Zagazig University hospital. Comparison between survivors and non-survivors was done in relation to normal controls. Aerobic and anaerobic blood cultures were done to separate the possible organisms in the first 24 hours of admission. In this study 39 cases with sepsis syndrome were followed up for three weeks or until died. The mortality rate was 48.7%. TNF - a appears early in the course of sepsis and continue in more severly ill patients. Circulating 11-6 has been reported to be of important value in sepsis syndrome.
