Abstract:

Forty consegutively admitted cirrhotic patients with Ascites and their total protein in asciticfluid is lower than 15 gm/ L were selected from the out patient clinic of Benha University Hospital. Patients were randomly allocated to two groups, group I (20patients) included those patients undergoing selective intestinal decontamination with norfloxacin (400 mg twice daily for 7 days) Group II (20patients) which comprised the untreated control. This work is concerned with assessment of serum and ascitic fluid C3 & C4 levels in cirrhotic patients with ascites after selective intestinal decontamination with norficocacin. The mean level of C3 was significantly higher in group I who under going selective intestinal decontamination than the untreated control group. There was no significant variation in the mean level. of C4 between group receiving norilcocacin therpy and control group. The mean level of total protein in serum and ascitic ftuid was significantly higher in group I than the untreated group. It was found that the prevalence of hepatic encephalopathy and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis was higher in untreated group. The organi-
