Blood samples were collected from apparently healthy, non-paid blood donors in the period from February to May 1992 from Assiut area and rural areas around it. Questionnaires was filled for all donors including various demographic data. Eighty-eight samples were collected ( 44 males and 44 females) of age group 16-55 years (mean 35 years). Five (5.68%) samples were positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), 4 (9.09%) male and 1 (2.27%) female. Two (2.27%) samples were positive for cytomegalovirus (CMV)-IgM antibody, both were females. In the age group 26-35 years, two out of 26 samples (7.69%) were positive for HBsAg, and two out of 26 (7.69%) were positive for CMV-IgM antibody. In the age group 36-45 years, three out of 30 (10.00%) were positive for HBsAg. All positive samples as regards HBsAg and CMV-IgM antibody were from rural area with low socioeconomic status.
