This study was designed to detect the different relations between the serum neopterin
levels and some risk factors (smoking, hypercholesterol-aemia,diabetes and
hypertension)in patients with coronary artery diseases(CAD). It included 65
individuals classified as fellows: 23 patient with acute coronary syndrome(ACS); 16
male (69.6%) and 7 female (30.4%), 20 patient with stable angina (SA);15 male
(75.0%) and 5 female (25%) and 22 control subjects; 15 male (68.2%) and 7 females
(31.8%). The age of the studied groups ranged 41-54 years. Serum samples were
collected from patients {within 24 hours of admission to coronary care unit(CCU);
and healthy controls. Serum neopterin level was determined by the enzyme linked
immunosorbent assay(F.1.1SA). Mean serum neopterin levels in ACS group
was(18.8±3.3nmol/L) and in the SA group was (16.3+2.4 nmol/L), both were
significantly higher than that in controls(8.2±2.5nniol/L) (p<0.001)and its level in
ACS was statistically significantly higher than that in SA groups (p=0.007). There
were non significant statistical values in the correlations of the sex and age with the
neopterin levels in the patients groups. The mean neopterin level in smokers of SA
group(16.2+2.7nmol/L) was lower than that in smokers of ACS
group(17.8±2.7nmol/L). it was higher in non smokers than the smokers of ACS group
and there were no difference in the mean neopterin levels in the smokers and non
smokers of SA group. M+SD of neopterin level in patients with
hypercholesterolaemia in SA group(16.33±2.46nmol/L)was lower than that in ACS
group (18.0±3.85nmol/L) and there are non significant statistical correlations between
the mean neopterin and cholesterol levels in ACS and SA groups (p=0.15,p=0.9
respectively). Diabetic patients had higher neopterin levels than non diabetics in ACS
and SA groups. There are significant and non significant statistical correlations
between the mean neopterin level and diabetes in ACS and SA
patients(p=0.006,p=0.87 respectively). In ACS group the mean neopterin level in
hypertensive was lower than that in normotensive patients, while in SA group there
were no differende in the mean neopterin level between hypertensive and
nortnotcnsivc patients and there arc non significant statistical correlations between
the neopterin level and blood pressure in ACS and SA groups. lii conclusion: serum
neoptei in level is elevated in coronary heart diseases and affected by some risk factors |
