Abstract:

Intercellular adhesion molecule-I (ICAM-1) is regulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines and plays an important role in immune response in various disease states. In this study the serum levels of circulating ICAM-1 (cICAM-I) were measured in 90 children; 20 of them had nephrotic syndrome before treatment, 20 with nephrotic syndrome during remission, 20 nephrotic patients in replase, 20 with post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis and ID were healthy controls. We have found that the mean serum level of cICAM-1 was significantly higher in nephrotic syndrome before treatment than in healthy controls (P<0.01), whereas it was significantly lower during remission than controls (P<0.0 I), but in relapse there was no significant difference when compared with the healthy controls. Also we have found that, there was no significant difference between post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis and healthy controls as regards cICAM-1. We concluded that the serum levels of cICAM-1 were significantly elevated in nephrotic syndyome before treatment and significantly decreased during remission but had no significant difference in relapse as well as in post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis compared to that of healthy controls.
