Twenty rabbits (40 eyes) were subjected to filtering surgery
followed by single application of mitomycin C for five minutes in one eye
in ten rabbits, wherein the other ten rabbits received subconjunctival
injection of 5- fluorouracil once daily for three days in one eye while the
other eye of both groups was considered as a control. Comparison of
toxicity of both drugs on sclera, tension, ciliary body, conjunctiva, cornea
was conducted with a follow up period of six weeks.
In eyes treated with mitomycin C there was mild fibrovascular
proliferation at the operative site with failure of functioning blebs in only
four eyes, also there was mild corneal oedema and scleral thinning
In eyes treated with 5- fluorouracil, there was marked
vascularisation and mild fibrous proliferation at the operative site with
failure of functioning blebs in only four eyes. Also there was marked
