Abstract:

We have examined the effect of remifentanil andfentanil on the haemodynamic response to orotracheal intubation in a randomized double blind study. We studied 60 patients patients undergoing leparascopic cholecystectomy allocated to one of 3 groups of 20 eachto receive the following im mediately before induction of anaesthesia: Remifentanil lug/kg bolus over 30 S ^followed by an infusion of 0.25 ug/kg/min. Fenianyl lug/kg bolus over 30 S, followed by an infusion of 0.25 ug/ kg/mtn. Saline placebo only. Anaesthesia was induced with thiopental Naatracurium and 1% isoflurane with 66% nitrous oxide in oxygeruThe trachea was intubated un der direct laryngoscopy 3mtn.gfter induction of anasthesia. Arterial pressure and heart rate were measured nonirwasively, immediately before induction of anaesthesia and then at 1mlnintervals Remifentanil was found to effectively attenuate the pressor response to intubation Remifentanil was associated with bradycardia or hypotension or both, in 3of 20patients Compared with one patient who re ceived fentaniL
