Abstract:

The antimetic efficacy of dexamethasone given prophykxcttcally was investigated in 60 children undergoing elective strabismus surgery. We compared the antiemetic of dexamethasone plus dropridol (group 1} with that of dropridol alone (group ID- Before induction of anaesthesia, patients were randomly allocated to receive intravenous dexamethasone (150u/kg up to a maximum dose ofSmg) plus dropridol (75ug/kg) group I or droperidol alone (75ug/kg) group II. Both groups were given standard general anaesthesia. AH perioperative parameters such as intravenous fluids, mangement of emesis, post operative pain, and discharge time were standardized The number of the patients with no nausea and vomiting in group I (dexamthasone dropridol group} was 20 compared with 13 in group n (dropridol group} (p<0.00 1}. The number of patients who experienced nausea in group I was 5 compared with 9in group U. The number of the patients who had mild vomiting in group Iwas 4compared to 6 patints in group U, the number of the patients who had severe vomiting requiring antiemetic theropy wasl in group I compared to 2 patients in groupH and all these grades p value was signficanz (p<0.05). The discharge time in minutes for group I was 19227 com pared to 22470in group H (p <0.001)
