Abstract:

in the clinical study, the patients were divided into 4 equal groups, 20 per each. The following groups were studied during different surgical procedures, the first control group where the patients received, extradural plain bupivacaine, the second and third groups where clonidine 150 and 300 pg were added to bupivacaine and the fourth group where fenianyl (50 pg) and clonidine (150 mg) were added to bupivacaine. Extradural clonidine induced a significant decrease in heart rate, systolic, diastelic and mean blood pressure starting 45 to 60 minutes from the start of the study and continued till the end of the observation time. The decrease in heart rate was dose dependent. Also, dose dependent sedation was observed in clonidine groups. Clonidine, with local analgesics in the extradural space, decreases the need for postoperative analgesia. Addition of fenianyl to extradural clonidine prolonged the duration of its analgesic effect. From the plmrmacological work, it was concluded that clonidine has analgesic and antiarrhythmic effects in rats
