Abstract:

Background: Thrombocytopenia is the most common coagulation disorder seen in the intensive care unit (ICU), and seems to be associated with higher mortality rates. Objective: The aim of this work is to evaluate the impact of thrombocytopenia on outcome in multiorgan failure patients. Methods: A prospective observational study which analyzed data collected from 50 adult (age ≥ 18 years) patients with multiorgan failure (defined as SOFA score of ≥ 3 in ≥ 2 organ systems) admitted to critical care medicine department at Benha University over a period of 12 months. They were classified into 2 groups: Group I included 30 patients with thrombocytopenia on admission or developed it anytime during the ICU stay. Thrombocytopenia was defined as a platelet count
