Abstract:

ABSTRACT Background: Assessment of clinical competence is of great importance when evaluating the expected learning outcomes of nursing education. Increasing number of students enrolled at Egyptian Nursing Faculties might increase the chances of malpractice that compromise patients’ conditions. Therefore it is challenging to have such an objective assessment tool to comprehensively assess students’ clinical competencies especially with increased students’ number. Aims of the current study: were assessing the clinical evaluation methods in Medical Surgical Laboratories and Suggesting guide lines for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations. Methods: To achieve aims of this study, Descriptive co relational study design was utilized to conduct this study in Medical Surgical Laboratories at the Faculty of Nursing, Benha University, Egypt . The study sample included , All the available Clinical Instructors and Lecturers who teach and supervise the 2nd year nursing students and their experience in clinical evaluation at least one year (n=30) as well as Laboratory Technicians in Medical Surgical Laboratories. In addition to 50% of 2nd year nursing students (n=150)who were chosen by systematic random method. with the exclusion of all students who weren’t registered for the first academic year in the selected setting. Tools of this study consisted of four tools : The first tool was concerned with assessment of clinical course specification in relation to NARS ,The second tool consisted of the demographic characteristics of studied sample, and the assessment of selected sample's satisfaction regarding current clinical evaluation through assessment of human and non-human resources . The third tool was an assessment sheet of current clinical evaluation tools. The fourth tool was an assessment sheet to assess knowledge of studied staff regarding OSCE. Results of this study showed that, Majority of staff and clinical instructors indicated that the disadvantages of traditional clinical evaluation methods were being time and effort consuming, in addition to shortage of resources in clinical areas and subjectivity, as indicated by 90.0% ,83.33%,,and,66.66%,respectively. 70.0 % of the staff members had knowledge, in spite of having no previous experience in utilizing OSCEs . 61.90% of them reported that OSCEs Improve the performance of assistant staff and provide opportunity to learn real life scenarios. conclusion Traditional clinical nursing examinations are not standardized to assess clinical competency .So OSCE can be used besides other methods of assessment as an appropriate method in evaluation basic nursing clinical skills.
