Abstract:

Ensuring patient safety is a fundamental aspect of healthcare delivery across all settings. Identifying any deficiencies in care and enhancing nurses' awareness of their pivotal role are critical in saving patients' lives. This study aims to assess the impact of an intervention protocol focused on safety measures, with a focus on knowledge, practices, and attitudes of nurses caring for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization. Design: A quasi-experimental research design with a pre/post-test approach was employed for this study. Setting: The study was conducted within the cardiac catheterization unit at Benha University Hospital, which is affiliated with Benha University, located in Qualyubia Governorate, Egypt. Sample: A convenience sample of 40 cardiac nurses of both genders was included in the study. Tools: Three distinct tools were employed: I. A structured interview questionnaire to assess nurses' knowledge concerning safety measures. II. A safety measures observational checklist to evaluate nurses' practical implementation of safety measures. III. A safety attitude questionnaire to gauge nurses' overall attitude towards safety. Results: Following the implementation of the intervention protocol, significant positive outcomes were observed: A highly statistically significant correlation between total knowledge and attitude among the studied nurses (p ≤ 0.001). A statistically significant correlation between total practices, total knowledge, and attitude among the studied nurses (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: The study's findings indicate a substantial improvement in nurses' overall knowledge, practices, and attitude concerning cardiac catheterization and safety measures immediately post-intervention protocol. Recommendations: To uphold patient safety and quality care, it is recommended that nurses working in cardiac catheterization units actively engage in continuous educational and training programs. These initiatives are crucial for updating nurses' knowledge and enhancing their practical skills with respect to safety measures concepts. Such ongoing professional development ensures that nurses remain current and competent in providing safe care for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.
