Abstract:

Background: semi carbazide (SEM) in plastic sealed jars, flour additive induce free radicals to damage thyroid. Pomegranate Peel Extract (PPE) has antioxidant properties Aim: the possible SEM-induced thyroid toxicity in adult male albino rats, the protective function of Pomegranate Peel Extract (PPE) was assessed. Methods: 50 adult male albino rats were divided into 5 groups randomly. Each group was 10. control group: wasn't given any treatment. (PPE group): was given as 500 mg/kg PPE once daily for 4 weeks. SEM-treated group: was given as 40 mg/kg SEM once daily for 4 weeks. SEM and PPE treated group: was given SEM and PPE in same dose, duration as PPE group and SEM treated group. Recovery group: for four weeks, the rats were administered 40 mg/kg SEM once daily. After which the rodents were left untreated for an additional four weeks. Results: SEM decreased T3,T4 and increased TSH. It produced disrupted histological architecture of thyroid gland. A decrease in PAS reaction was observed, while collagen deposition and caspase-3 immuno-expression increased. T4 and T3 were elevated by PPE with SEM, while TSH was decreased. Almost normal histological architecture of the thyroid gland was restored. It was observed that the PAS reaction increased, while collagen deposition and caspase-3 immuno-expression decreased. In recovery group, the hormonal, histological and immunohitochemical changes were improved but less marked than in SEM and PPE treated group. Conclusion: PPE has potent effect in elimination the harmful effects of SEM on the thyroid gland.
