Abstract:

CLASSICAL chemotherapeutic drug 5 -fluorouracil has been administered for cancer treatment, although it has awful effects on vital organs. As a result of many therapeutic actions of Curcuma longa root extract (CLE), it has been used worldwide in traditional medicine. Recently, many studies suggested it as an anticancer agent. In this study, CLE has been assessed for preclinical safety in a model of dimethylhydrazine -induced colon cancer in albino rats as an alternative drug for 5 - fluorouracil. This is achieved through microscopic and chemical examinations to test the protective effect in the liver, kidney, and heart as vital organs. Results: There was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in different function tests of organs for low dose and high dose of CLE groups compared with the 5 -fluorouracil -treated group. With the exception of that, the small dose group of it has an insignificant decrease in bilirubin, VLDL, triglycerides, CK -MB, and uric acid results when compared with those of the standard one. Additionally, CLE treatments have been enhancing the pathological pictures of different organs more than the 5 -fluorouracil group. In conclusion: Current data supported that 5 -fluorouracil has more risky aspects along the life of patients as an anticancer agent. This can be avoided with the usage of CLE instead of 5 -fluorouracil.
