Abstract:

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of hypomagnesaemia and its treatment with magnesium sulphate on erythrocyte antioxidant defense system, brain and heart functions as well as some hormones in hypomagnesaemic camels. For that purpose, eleven young male camels belonged to two private camel farms in Meet Kenana, Tokh, Kalubyia, aged 16-24 months old were used. Six camels in the first farm showed signs of hypomagnesaemia with a history of feeding bad quality hay for long time while five camels in the neiboghouring farm appeared clinically healthy used as control group. Blood samples were collected from both control and hypomagnesaemic camels before, and after one, two weeks of treatment with Mg. Sulfate. Every blood sample was divided into two parts: the first part was collected without anticoagulant for separation of serum sample which was used freshly for determination of Acetylcholine estrase, (AChE) monoamine oxidase (MAO), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), magnesium (Mg), nitric oxide (NO), malondialde-hyde (MDA), insulin and cortisone. The second part of blood sample was collected in heparin containing tubes and used for preparation of hemolysate which was subjected for determination of erythrocyte catalase, GST, GSH-px, GR-ase and SOD activities as well as GSH concentration. The recorded data showed that, serum magnesium concentration decreased in hypomagnesaemic camels compared to control group. A significant decreases in serum AChE, insulin, NO, erythrocyte GSHPx, GST, GRase, t-SOD and GSH concentration while catalase activity was increased in hypomagnesaemic camels. Moreover, CPK and LDH showed highly significant increases associated with significant increase in cortisone and MDA of hypomagnesaemic camels compared to control healthy group. Such changes were ameliorated after treatment with mg. sulfate. From these results, it could be concluded that, most biochemical parameters were markedly affected in hypomagnesaemic camels.
