Abstract:

Back ground: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the esophagus that has become widely recognized as a major cause of upper gastrointestinal morbidity. It is currently defined as an immune/allergic mediated clinicopathologic condition characterized by symptoms of esophageal dysfunction and a prominent eosinophilic infiltrate in the esophageal mucosa. Aim of the work: to assess the frequency of eosinophilic esophagitis among the patients with refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease. Methodology: This is a cross sectional study included 80 patients in the period from December 2016 to December 2018 complaining of esophageal symptoms such as dysphagia, heart burn, odynophagia, food impaction, abdominal pain and vomiting. Upper, middle and lower esophageal biopsies were taken and examined under HPF. Eosinophilic esophagitis was diagnosed by >/= 15 eosinophils/HPF also serum blood samples were taken for assessment level of IL-5 in the studied cases. Results: Mean age of the participants was 38 ± 13.6 years. six patients out of 80 proved to have eosinophilic esophagitis after histopathoplogical examination of esophageal biopsies. five cases were presented by dysphagia (p=0.015) and all six cases were presented by heart burn (p=0.033). Total number of GERD patients were 63 (24 had grade A, 32had grade B, 6 had grade C and 1 had grade D). IL-5 was highly significant to diagnose eosinophilic esophagitis (p=
