A simple, rapid, and sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of platinum in solution. The chromogenic reagent 2-carboxyphenyl4`-hydroxy-3`-formyl azobenzene(I) and its corresponding azomethine (II) react with platinum(IV) almost instantaneously in borate buffer of pH 7.5 and 6.77, respectively, to form oranf (1:1) and (1: 2) (M;L) complexes with λmax at 488, and 563 nm fir ligands I and II, respectively. Beer`s law is obeyed over the concentration ranges upto 13.66 and 7,80 µg/ml of platinum using I and II, respectively.the method has been used for the determination of platinum in synthetic solutions that approcimate the composition of some alloys and minerals.
