In 2004/05 growing season, the seven parents and F2 crosses were grown
under salinity conditions at Ras Sudr Agricultural Experimental Station with using
saline irrigation water (about 5000 ppm), The results obtained indicated to mean
squares for genotypes, parents, F2-crosses and parents vs. F2 crosses were highly
significant for all the studied traits except parents vs. F2-crosses for flag leaf area.
The parental line 606 performed as the first highest tested genotypes in grain, straw
and biological yields/plant and 1000-kernel weight. The F2-crosses. (ICARDA 3 X
line 606), (Sham 6 x Giza 168) and (Sham 6 X Gemmiza 7) exhibited sign ijى cant
highest mean values for grain, straw and biological yields/plant. The superior of the
previous F2-crosses also higher signijicant mean values for one or more of yield
components. Therefore, these crosses are important and prospective in wheat
breeding pro gram for tolerant to salinity. With the exception of harvest index, the F2-
hybrids means were sign ijicant higher than parent means for all the studied traits.
The most desirable heterotic effects were detected by four F2-crosses (Yacora Rojo X
Giza 168), (Sham6 X Giza 168), (Sham 6 X Gemmiza 7) and (ICARDA 3 X line 606)
for straw, grain and biological yields/plant. Also, general and spec ijic combining
ability (GCA & SCA) mean squares were sign ijI cant for all the studied traits. The two
parents Sham 6 and line 606 could be considered as excellent parents in breeding
programs releasing variety with high grain, straw and biological yields/plant and
some of its components under saline condition. The crosses (ICARDA 3 X line 606),
(Sham 6 X Gemmiza 7), (Yacora Rojo X ICARDA 3), (Yacora Rojo X Giza 168) and
(Sham 6 X Giza 168) exhibited signijkant positive s effects for most traits under
study. Therefore, these crosses seemed to be the best combinations for breeding
programs towards high grain yield and some of its components under saline
condition. |
