A IR dried seeds of the two varieties Giza 1 and Giza 2 of Vicia
faba L. were gamma irradiated with doses of 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 kr,
or treated with EA in concentrations 0.05, 0.15, 0.25% or with DES in
concentrations 0.015, 0.020, 0.025 and 0.030M. Combined treatments
of 6 kr of gamma rays + DES (0.020 and 0.025 M) and 9 kr + EA
(0.25 and 0.50%), also were carried on. After different treatments,
seeds were directly sown in the field for growing Mj. At harvest, seeds
were taken from 200 Mj individual plants for each treatment (of all
plants in the treatment if they are less than 200 plants) and were sown in
200 rows to grow their M2 generation progenies. At ripening all
mutated pkinls were screened in M2 and individualy harvested and
threshed. Also plants of unchanged families, were spearately harvested
and threshed. In the third season 1975 -1976 all were sown in individual
rows as in M2 for growing M3. Marphological and physicological
mutations induced in M2 and M3 were screened and counted in each
treatment.
It was found that frequency of such mutations increased by increas
ing radition dose or concentration of chemicals. Combination
employments gave higher percentage of morphological and
phsiological mutations than individual treatments. DES gave the
highest frequency, followed by EA and then by gamma rays.
