Embryo transfer has been used as a management procedure to obtain foals from mares unable to carry a foal to term for a
variety of reasons such as age, chronic uterine infection, and some specific reasons such as chronic abdominal hernia. This study
will present selected older Arabian mares of chronic infertility and one mare who suffered from injury (hernia) in which embryo
transfer was the treatment of choice to obtain foals. A 30 sub-fertile older (> 15 yr. old) Arabian mare suffered from bacterial
endometritis and an endometrial cyst diagnosed by ultrasonography one case suffered from a long-standing hernia and was
referred for embryo transfer after a proper uterine treatment. Among the total number of donor mare (n=30), 56 flushes were
considered with 16 embryos collected (positive flushing) with a recovery rate of 53.3%. All 16 embryos were immediately
transferred trans-cervically into synchronized recipient mares, there were 14 embryos (46.6%) developed which resulted in a
pregnancy at 11-14 days examined by ultrasound, and 2 embryos were lost. All 14 transferred embryos continued to develop
normally, giving rise to healthy foal (46.6%). |
