Abstract:

Background: Caregivers of children with ADHD often experience emotional and physical stress because of increasing demands of the child condition. Psycho-education program is a novel treatment paradigm including information about ADHD and its treatment, aid to develop coping skills for empowerment psychological capital and decrease feeling of burden among caregivers of children with ADHD Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of psycho-educational nursing program on feeling of burden and psychological capital among caregivers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Research design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized to achieve the aim of the study. Setting: The study was conducted at the children outpatient clinics at Psychiatric and Mental Health Hospital and Addiction Treatment at Benha city, Qalubia governorate which is affiliated to General Secretariat of mental health. Subject: A purposive sample of (60) caregivers of children with ADHD was utilized in this study. Tools: Three tools were used for data collection: Tool (1): - A- structured interviewing questionnaire sheet included socio- demographic data of studied caregivers, socio- demographic and clinical data of the affected children as well as caregivers' knowledge about ADHD. Tool (2):- Zarit burden interview scale & Tool (3):- Psychological capital questionnaire. Results: The result of the present study revealed that more than three quarters of the studied caregivers had satisfactory knowledge about ADHD, less than three quarters had high psychological capital level and less than one quarter of the studied caregivers had moderate burden level post-program implementation than before. Conclusion: Psycho-educational nursing program had a positive effect on feeling of burden and psychological capital among the studied caregivers of children with ADHD. Recommendations: Counseling services of caregivers and their children with ADHD will be needed at every psychiatric hospital.
