Abstract:

Measurement station with mast of 19 m has been established in a built- up area, near the sea shore to study the structure of a coastal location‘‘Port Said’’on Suez Canal–Mediterranean Sea intercept in Egypt. Fromouranalysisofthewinddata, animportantcharacteristicisrevealedinthatthewind speed SpringmonthsaremorethanthatinWinterperiod.Thischaracteristicisoppositetothe prevailingwindspeedparametersinmostEuropeancountries.Thispaperalsogivesadetailedanalysis of measuredfrequencydistributionsandmonthlywindspeedvariationwithairtemperaturethatcan exploitedinthebestwayforfastwindmachines. A numericalmodelwasintroducedtocalculatethemonthlyandannualaveragewindenergyflux and foundtobequitemoderate(inexcessof92kW/m2 per yearat50mhubheight)forthisarea. It appearsfromourresearchthattheexpectedenergyfromthewindinPortSaidregion–whichis nearly likeanisland–liesinthemediumrange.Thispotentialcanbeconvertedtoelectricalenergy speciallyintheSpringmonths. However, animmediateapplicationseemstobelimitedtoelectricity generationusingmediumsizewindfarmsandwaterpumping.
