In this study. the possible cardioprotective effect of two antioxidant
agents namely vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) and vitamin E (Alpha tocopherol)
on a model of acute myocardial infarction induced by isoprenaline injection
in rats was investigated. Rats were divided into four groups. control
group which was received ordinary diet and water for 2weelcs, vitamin C
treated group which was received vitamin C 20 mg/kg/oral/y/ day for 2
weeks . vitamin E treated group which was received vitamin E 10 mg /
kg/ day orally for 2 weeks. vitamin C and vitamin E treated group which
was received vitamin C 20mg / kg / day and vitamin E10 mg / kg / day orally
for 2 weeks . At end of the second week all rats were subjected to
acute myocardial infarction by S.C. injection of isoprenaline. E.C.G changes.
serum CPK, serum LDH and histopathological changes in cardiac tissue
were studied.
The results of this study showed that either vitamin C and vitamin E
alone or in combination had cardioprotective effect on this model of acute
myocardial infarction in rats as these drugs significantly prevented the
increase in T wave amplitude, serum CPK and serum LDH 4 hours after
isoprenaline injection compared to control group . Furthermore these
drugs improved histopathological changes in cardiac tissue of rats
