Abstract:

Functional foods have evolved from traditional dietary supplements to scientifically validated health solutions, playing an increasingly vital role in both human and animal health. This chapter explores the dynamic landscape of functional foods, highlighting future perspectives and critical research directions in this field. Personalized nutrition, driven by nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics, enables the development of tailored functional food products. Biotechnology, through gene editing and microbial engineering, enhances nutrient density and bioavailability, leading to the development of novel bioactive compounds. Significant research gaps exist in the exploration of untapped natural sources and elucidation of the molecular mechanisms of action of functional food components. Advances in food processing technologies, especially non-thermal methods such as nanoencapsulation and high-pressure processing, are crucial for preserving the bioactivity of sensitive ingredients. Sustainability and eco-friendly production, embracing circular economy principles and plant-based proteins, are the cornerstones of the future of functional foods. The integration of functional foods into global health initiatives offers a powerful strategy to combat widespread challenges, such as malnutrition and chronic diseases, necessitating robust and harmonized regulatory frameworks. Cross-disciplinary research collaboration is vital for accelerating scientific discoveries and translating them into practical applications. Understanding consumer acceptance and implementing effective education and communication strategies are paramount for the widespread adoption and long-term impact of these foods. The potential of functional foods to contribute significantly to both human and animal health, foster sustainable food systems, and address global health challenges is undeniable. Continued dedication to scientific inquiry, technological advancement, and public engagement is encouraged to shape a healthier and more sustainable future through the use of functional foods.
