Abstract:

ABSTRACT A geotechnical zonation map was developed for the urban areas in Nile Delta based on the analysis of more than 27500 boreholes distributed in the area. In this map, the urban areas in the Nile Delta are divided into 26 geotechnical zones of specified soil stratifications and characteristics, which are presented in the form of typical borehole logs for the different zones. Also, maps for the distribution of problematic soils (peat, soft clays, fill with significant thicknesses, collapsible soils, and swelling soils) are produced. In addition, a comprehensive review of the topography, geomorphology, geology, and hydrogeology of the Nile Delta is presented in a simple a concise form that helps geotechnical engineers to identify the relationship between these characteristics and the resulting geotechnical formation and properties in the different geotechnical zones.
