Background: The increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in both developed and developing countries is associated with musculoskeletal and other non-communicable diseases.
Objective: Identification of some of obesity risk factors , revealing different pattern of body composition, prediction of some NCD related to obesity and find the correlation between BMI AND BF% for assessment of obesity.
Subject and method: A community based study was conducted in two randomly selected rural areas in Qalubia governorate. Ever married females age 20-49 years and not currently pregnant (n=300) were included in the study. Questionnaire was used for recording data during the household survey. Body composition was assessed by using a Portable equipment that estimates body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).
Result: Roc curve analysis showed cut off point for body fat percent of 38% for hypertension and cardiovascular disease but cut off points for reporting diabetes and joint disease is 36% and 37% respectively.
Conclusion and recommendations: Bioelectrical impedance analysis was effective in predicting and suggesting the cut off points for the body fat percent associated with four types of NCDs (hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular and joint disease). The use of BIA for women before age of 20 years could guide strategies for reducing body fat and its risk of NCD.
