Abstract:

Investigations carried out during the period from Oktober 1989 to September 1991 showed that the most important insect species, found infesting the stored commodities in the Kalyubia Covernorate, Egypt are: Sitophilus oryzae (L.); Sitophilus zeamais Motsch.; (L.); dominica (F.); Sitotrog, cerealla (Oliv.); Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.); Callosobruc] maculatus TVTruchus rufimanus (Boh.); kuehniella Zell.; QLy’ surinamensis (L.); L. and Plodia interpunctella (Hbn.). The storage period of grains and pulses varied from 3 to 12 months. Store—rooms at farmer’s house, mud bins, shounas of the Principal Bank for Development and Agricultural Credit (PBDAC), merchant granaries and maize stored on robs at the house—roof were the most storage methods used in the Kalyubia region. These storage facilities were briefly described. Infestation rate and loss in weight of some stored commodities were determined. Results revealed that the highest infestation rate was recorded in merchant granaries, whereby it was 5.74, 4,18 and 8.92% for wheat, maize and broad beans, respectively, while it was 11% in the store— rooms and 7.68% in merchant granaries for cow peas. The lowest infestation rate was obtained in case of wheat in PdDAC—shounas (0.37%) and for maize, which stored on cobs at the house—roof (0.5%). Loss in weight was in range (0.03—0.77%) for cereal grains and 1.41—2.81% for grain pulses.
