Abstract:

The current study aims to represent a therapeutic program with music for improving the adaptive behavior in mentally retarded children, and test the effectiveness of the program on improving the level of adaptive behavior on those children with mental retardation. 36 of educable mentally handicapped children participated in the study aged 10-13: years, divided into three matched groups experimental group which listen only to the program the second experimental group listen and participate in the program the third is control group, the current study depended on experimental approach. The author used Stanford Bennie scale for intelligence; adaptive behavior scale and the music program which deal with the psychological and musical side. The study also used Mann Wittney test; Wilcoxon test; and Z value. The findings of the study indicated that the effectiveness of music therapy in improving adaptive behavior in educable mentally retarded children , it found significant statistically differences between the mean degrees of the two experimental groups and control one in the level of adaptive behavior; it also found significant statistically differences between the mean degrees of the two experimental groups in pre and post test in favor of post test; and found no significant statistically differences between the two experimental groups in posttest and follow-up. The study found significant statistically differences between the two experimental groups (experimental group which listen only to the program the second experimental group listen and participate in the program).
