Abstract:

Background: Cancer is a class of disease or disorder characterized by uncontrolled division of cells and the ability of these cells to invade other tissues, either by direct growth into adjacent tissue through invasion or by implantation into distant sites by metastasis. Aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of educational intervention on maternal management of children with cancer and evaluate the effect of educational intervention on child progress. Quasi-experimental design (pre and post intervention) was utilized to fulfill the aim of this study, the study conducted at Specialized Pediatric Hospital at Benha City, sixty mothers and their children with cancer Tools of data collection consisted of pre and immediate post structured interviewing questionnaire which contains part one: socio-demographic data of mothers and their children, part two: mothers' knowledge regarding to childhood cancer as definition, causes, symptoms, complications and care at home. Pre/post mothers' practice checklist. The Pediatric Oncology Quality of Life Scale which contain part one: the performance status of children according to Lansky Play Performance Scale, part two: The Health Utilities Index, health status classification system scale and educational training program handout. Results: the mean age of mothers was 32.9 ± 6.9 years. There was significant positive correlation of total mothers’ knowledge and total practice with age and educational level, while regarding total quality of life there were significant positive correlation were found with educational level. Regarding performance status of children there were significant positive correlation with family size and duration of disease. Conclusion and Recommendation: the educational intervention was effective on improving mothers' knowledge and practice related to care of their children with cancer and their quality of life. Provide mothers of children with childhood cancer by updated Arabic booklets about childhood cancer which contain an action plan suitable for each child's cancer nature in order to facilitate improving their knowledge as they considered the main member in children's care team.
