Abstract:

Globalization, information technology and communication revolution are some key words of our new world. We are witness of the early phase of a fundamental change of the socio-economic system, and the way society is organizing spaces as well, especially in their relation to both distance and time factor. Within the urban design context, the meaning of different words has changed such as public/private, Inside/outside, here/there. Moreover, the role of urban space changed from being a place which encourages urbanity to contradicting phenomenon of privatopia. New types of human activities have appeared which allow a person to work through his home or to order his shopping from a bus or a train. Cyberspace is a new free space without the restriction of both time and distance. By such changes of different planning and architectural concepts, a new way of thinking should appear. To examine such hypothesis, the research is oriented towards answering the following questions: What are the effect of the new era of communication and information technology on both the physical built environment and aspects of people’s social life. Besides, what are the role of urban planners and designers in the new future digital world?
