In this prospective randomized study, we compare and evaluate the role of amlodipine in decreasing myocardial stunning after aortic valve replacement from October 2007 till September 2009.
60 patients were studied and divided into 2 groups; Group I: This group contained 30 patients; they were receiving 5mg oral amlodipine 7 days before the operation . Group II: This group contained 30 patients; they were not receiving medication .
All patients were subjected to a careful history analysis, thorough clinical examination and complete investigatory profile.
Preoperative variables included age, gender, hypertension, smoking, diabetes mellitus, liver and renal function tests and left ventricular ejection fraction measured echocardiographically.
Intraoperative variables included cardiopulmonary bypass time , aortic cross time, myocardial status, rhythm of return after removal of cross clamp and come offbypass.
Postoperative variables included ICU time,, need for inotropic support ,electrocardiographic changes, echocardiography and laboratory findings.
Results showed significant statistically difference regarding the time needed by the heart to start beating, the need of support when coming offbypass, echocardiographic findings and laboratory findings (p value |
