Abstract:

Purpose: 6 The aim of this study was to assess the effect of intermittent fasting and 7 dehydration on the intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients under glaucoma 8 treatment. 9 Patients and Methods: 10 11 The present study was conducted on 36 of glaucoma cases and 30 healthy 12 control subjects of matched age and gender .IOP measurements with 13 Goldmann applanation tonometer (IOP-GAT) were taken One week 14 before fasting (at 8.00 am), during Ramadan fasting (first, second, third, 15 and forth week) (at 8.00 am and 4.00 pm) and one week after Ramadan 16 during the non‐fasting period (at 8.00 am), 17 Results: 18 The present study was conducted on 36 of glaucoma cases, their mean 19 age was 47.3 years, they were 12 males (33.3%) and 24 females (66.7%) 20 and 30 healthy subjects, their mean age was 47.7 years, they were 11 21 males (36.7%) and 19 females (63.3%).There was gradual decrease in 22 IOP with fasting, in both glaucomatous cases and control groups, with no 23 significant differences in IOP between groups during fasting. Glaucoma 24 cases showed significantly higher percentage change in IOP (either 25 improvement or deterioration) when compared to control group. 26 Conclusions: 27 Our results reveal that fasting during Ramadan has a lowering effect on 28 IOP values in healthy control subjects and glaucomatous patients. 29 Glaucoma cases showed significantly higher percentage change in IOP 30 when compared to control group.
