Abstract:

POST TRANSPLANT DIABETES IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS By Akeel Hlfny MD; MRCP, Mohamed A. Sobh* MD; El-Metwally El-Shahawy MD; Mohamed Y. Gamal MD; Nabll A. Khattab MD; Abdel Shafl Tabl MD and Yehia Saddik MD - «* Department of Internal Medicine, Benha Faculty of Medicine and Mansoura Urology and Nephrology Centre* ABSTRACT This study was carried out on 300 renal transplant recipients in order to evaluate post transplant diabetes in such patients. The incidence of post transplant diabetes was 12%. No correlation could be elicited between post transplant diabetes, age and cumulative dose of steroid therapy. There was a correlation between post transplant diabetes and positive diabetic family history. A higher incidence of HLA - A3, A28 and B16 was observed among post transplant diabetics. However, the outcome of patients and graft is not affected by post transplant diabetes. Therefore, diabetes in renal transplant recipients is usually mild and there is no good reason to consider such patients at higher risk for diabetic complications.
