Abstract:

In this study, an easily, extremely fast, low-cost method with high-capacity removal for sunset yellow (SSY) was developed. A new modified nano-copper oxide (CuO) was fabricated using both glycine (Gly) and beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Initially, the nano-copper oxide was prepared through chemical precipitation method and then modified with β-CD in the presence of glycine. This tailored copper oxide NPs was depicted using FT-IR and XRD. The prepared decorated oxide, assigned as β-CD@Gly/CuO, was used as adsorbent for removal of the nontoxic food colorant such as sunset yellow (SSY). Batch studies were accomplished to identify the best conditions for practically removal of SSY using UV/Vis spectrophotometric measurements at λmax  482 nm. The obtained results signified that more acidic medium of pH 1.7 was the optimum. The adsorption was found to be improved after β-CD decorated CuO nanoparticles due to the presence of many functional groups on β-CD which were able to bind SSY in acidic medium and reached 97% at the final conditions. In addition, the adsorption process was achieved in a relative short time of 10 min, and the model of the adsorption was found to follow Langmuir adsorption isotherm.
