SONOGRAPHIC STUDY OF PATIENTS WITH
URINARY TRACT INFECTION

ABSTRACT
This study included 60 infants and children having urinary tract
infection (UTI) With no history of previous attacks. They were picked up
from the out-patient paediatric clinics of Benha Faculty of Medicine
Hospital. They were subjected to careful history taking, thorough clinical
examination, urine cultures and clony counts. Ultrasonographic scanning was
done for all patients and those with abnormal findings were evaluated
radiologically.
Ultrasonography detected urinary tract abnormalities in 25 patients
(41.67%), with obstructive changes in 16 patients (26.67%).
The obstructive lesions demonstrated by ultrasonography were;
uretral obstruction in 6 patients (10%), uretro pelvic obstruction in 4
patients (6.66%), renal stones in 3 patients (5%), uretro pelvic stones in 2
patients (3.33%) and uretro vesical stone in one patient (1.66%).
Intravenous pyelography revealed that uretral obstruction was due to
stricture or stone, 3 cases each (5%).
The non obstructive lesions were urinary bladder stones in 4 patients
(6.66%), renal stones in 2 patients (3.33%), unilateral duplication of
renal pelvis and ureter in 2 patients (3.33%) and unilateral multi cystic
kidney in one patient (1.66%).
We concluded that the first diagnosed attack of UTI could be a sign of
serious underlying pathology such as obstructive uropathy, so we
recommend to use ultrasonographic scanning, being a safe and noninvasive
technique in all cases of UTI as soon as diagnosed for a better
management.
