Background: Perforation of the tympanic membrane is a common clinical concern for
ENT specialists. They’re mostly small to medium. Mini myringoplasty is a less invasive way to repair perforations of
this size. Objective: The current study's purpose is to compare two grafts in myringoplasty, temporalis fascia and
bacterial cellulose according to their results.
Patients and Methods: A non-randomized clinical trial. This study continued from May to November 2022 and included
all patients who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results: Our study comprised 40 patients, ranging in age from 20 to 50, including 14 men and 26 females. The surgical
success rates for the temporalis fascia group were 75%, while those for the bacterial cellulose group were 90%. In the
temporalis fascia group, the mean Air Bone (A-B) gap was 21.50 ± 3.28 preoperatively and 13.35 ± 5.93 postoperatively.
The surgery took 70.75 ± 5.68 minutes. In the bacterial cellulose group, the mean A-B gap was 22.00 ± 3.40
preoperatively and 10.25 ± 4.41 postoperatively. The surgery took 15.80 ± 2.40 minutes.
Conclusions: Myringoplasty with bacterial cellulose graft is a safe, minimally invasive, effective procedure. There is no
need for any harvesting incision. It is a low-cost option, a simple procedure that can be done in an outpatient clinic with
just local anesthesia and no hospital stay required. In this study, we have achieved in the bacterial cellulose group a high
success rate in healing and hearing results and also significantly less operating time than temporalis fascia graft
myringoplasty. |
