Back ground. conversation map-based education is an effective, patient-centered
approach for promoting the adoption of optimal diabetes self-care activities
ultimately supporting better health as diabetic patients could engage win group
discussions, share informations and experiences, and provide feedback. Aim: To
evaluate how conversation maps-based education could affect self management
stratgy among diabetic patients. Design: quasi-experimental research approach
(pre/post test) was utilized. The study conducted at endocrine outpatient clinic,
affiliated to Benha University Hospital, Qalyubia, Egypt. A conveience sample of
220 diabetic patients type II were involved in the study. Tools: Two tools were used:
(I) structured interview questionnaire involving patients’ socio-demographic
characteristics, medical history, lab investigations, and patients’ level of knowledge
regarding diabetes and self care activities. (II) Diabetes Self-Management
Questionnaire. Results: post implementation educational program using
conversation maps, there was asignificant improvement patients’ knowledge and self
management activities than before as only 24 % of the studied patients had good total
knowledge level pre conversation map-based education, which had been improved
to 77% immediately post conversation map-based education. In addition, 71 % of
them had poor total self management level pre conversation map-based education,
which had been declined to 22% immediately post conversation map-based
education. Conclusion: conversation maps was effective in improving knowledge
and self-management activities among diabetic patients. |
