Background:Aluminum,awell-recognizedneurotoxin,isimplicatedinvariousneurodegenerativedisorders.Moringaoleifera(M.oleifera),knownasamiracletree,isutilizedasafunctionalfoodandnutritionalsupplement.ThisstudyinvestigatesthepotentialpreventiveeffectsofM.oleiferaextractonaluminumchloride(AlCl3)-inducedcorticalneurodegenerationinrats.Materialsandmethods:Therefore,24adultmaleWistarratswererandomlydividedintofourdistinctgroups:negativecontrol,M.oleiferaextract(MOE),AlCl3,andAlCl3+MOE.Treatmentswereadministeredorallyfor28consecutivedays.Cognitiveperfor-mance,brainoxidative/nitrosativestress,neuroinflammation,apoptotic-celldeath,andassociatedhistopathologicalalterationswereassessed.Results:OurresultsshowedthatMOEimprovedspatiallearningandmemory,enhancedantioxidantsuperoxidedismutaseenzymeactivity,antagonizednitrosativestress,reducedinflammatorycytokines(tumornecrosisfactor-alphaandinterleukin-6),decreasedcaspase-3,increasedBcl-2,andfacilitatedrepairofcorticalandhippocampalstructures.Conclusions:WeconcludedthatMOEexhibitsprotectiveeffectsagainstcorticalneurodegeneration,makingitapromisingsupplementtocounteractaluminum-inducedneurotoxiceffects. |
