Abstract:

- THE STUDY PROBLEM: Narcissistic personality has much interest from researchers in the social and psychological sciences. That is because it is complex and has multi-dimensions. It is still vague and deserves further study. That was why the present study investigated the relationship between narcissism, self-esteem and aggression. The problem of the present study has been crystallized in the following main question: - What is the nature of relationship between narcissism dimensions (normal – pathological "overt – covert") and self-esteem? It was subdivided into the following three questions: 1) What is the nature of relationship between narcissism dimensions (normal – pathological " overt – covert") and self-esteem? 2) What is the nature of the relationship between narcissism dimensions (normal–pathological" overt– covert")and a tendency towards aggression? 3) what the nature of the relationship between narcissism dimensions(normal–pathological" overt–covert") and aggressive behavior? 4) Is there a statistically significant effect of the interaction of self-esteem and a tendency toward aggression and aggressive behavior on the narcissism of students at the University? - STUDY OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed at investigating the nature of relationship between narcissism dimensions (normal – pathological – overt - covert) among the university students and self-esteem and aggression. A narcissism scale was developed. - STUDY IMPORTANCE: The importance of the present study is clear in tackling the narcissism concept, dimensions, patterns, levels, features and causes. It will help the specialists and counselors in using the remedial techniques and programs for reducing narcissism and identifying the normal healthy narcissistic features for developing them. - STUDY TERMINOLOGY: The following terms were presented and defined: narcissism, self-esteem and aggression. - STUDY SAMPLE: The sample consisted of 200 male and female university students in the third year at Faculty of Education and Faculty of Physical Education for Boys, Benha University. - STUDY TOOLS: The present study used the following tools: 1) Narcissism scale for university students, prepared by the present study author. 2) Self-esteem scale, prepared by Hudson (1994) and translated into Arabic by Magdy Al-Desouqy. 3) Scale of tendency towards aggression, developed by Ashraf Abdul-Qader and Hesham Al-Kholy (1997). 4) Aggressive behaviour scale, developed by Ashraf Abdul-Qader and Hesham Al-Kholy (1997). - STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES: The following statistical techniques were followed in the present study: Correlation coefficient, variance analysis using the SPSS, and Tuky's test. - STUDY FINDINGS: 1. There was a statistically significant positive correlational relationship between the normal narcissism students' scores and theirs on the self-esteem scale. Thus, the first hypothesis was accepted. 2. There was a statistically significant positive correlational relationship between the overt narcissism students' scores and theirs on the self-esteem scale. So, the second hypothesis was verified. 3. There was a statistically significant negative correlational relationship between the convert narcissism students' scores and theirs on the self-esteem scale. Therefore, the third hypothesis was accepted. 4. There was a statistically significant negative correlational relationship between the normal narcissism students' scores and theirs on the tendency-towards-aggression scale. Thus, the fourth hypothesis was verified. 5. There was a statistically significant positive correlational relationship between the overt narcissism students' scores and theirs on the tendency-towards-aggression scale. So, the fifth hypothesis was accepted. 6. There was a statistically significant positive correlational relationship between the convert narcissism students' scores and theirs on the tendency-towards-aggression scale. Therefore, the sixth hypothesis was verified. 7. There was a statistically significant negative correlational relationship between the normal narcissism students' scores and theirs on the aggressive behaviour scale. Thus, the seventh hypothesis was verified. 8. There was a statistically significant positive correlational relationship between the overt narcissism students' scores and theirs on the aggressive behaviour scale. So, the eighth hypothesis was accepted. 9. There was a statistically significant positive correlational relationship between the convert narcissism students' scores and theirs on the aggressive behaviour scale. Therefore, the ninth hypothesis was verified. 10. There was an effect of narcissism on self-esteem, tendency towards aggression, aggressive behaviour among the university students. This effect was in favour of self-esteem. Therefore, the tenth hypothesis was accepted. ************
