Abstract:

Leadership is viewed as a dynamic, interactive process; it is the ability to affect a change in the behavior of others and to work with others towards achievement of long and short-term goals with a given social system. This study was conducted to identify the effect of leadership training program on the head nurses’ job performance at Benha University Hospital. The sample consisted of 60 head nurses who work in medical and surgical units at Benha University Hospital. A quasi - experimental design was utilized, three tools were used for data collection: The first tool of data collection was structured interviewing questionnaire to assess the head nurses' knowledge about leadership. The second tool, checklists format to examine the head nurses’ job performance through observation. The third tool of data collection is leadership style scale it used to measure leadership attitude of head nurses. The results of the present study revealed that, more than half (53.3%) of head nurses are working in medical departments. As regarded to age (46.7%) of study subject ranged between 24-30 years. Meanwhile, nearly half of them (51.7%) graduated from baccalaureate degree of nursing. This table also illustrates that the majority (45%) of the study subjects are holders of concerning to their experience are having experience 1- 10 years and 10-20 years in nursing field, in relation to marital status about three quarter of subjects (75.0%) are married. The total knowledge, performance and attitude of head nurses’highly statistical significant with gain good knowledge immediately post program and after three months, as compared to preprogram .There was no a significant relation between head nurses’ knowledge scores and demographic characteristics before program. No a significant relation between head nurses’ performance scores and demographic characteristics before program. Also there was a significant relation between head nurses’ attitudes scores and their qualification and year of experience before program. The study has also indicated highly statistically significant positive correlation among head nurses knowledge and performance scores at immediately post and after three months of program .According to these results the researcher recommended that in-service training programs about managerial skills must be developed on regular basis. Head nurse position (senior position) should be given to those with Bachelor degree. And job description must be structural and measurable based on the role responsibilities of nursing director and develop a controlling system for both appraisal and monitoring nursing service based on nursing standards.
